Every year it is a tradition that everyone plays the National lottery on December 22th. El Gordo has a long history.
This year the number of tickets on sale increased by 5 million to 165 million! Meaning the 2016 prize money was a total of €2.31 billion. The top individual prize, known as El Gordo (the Fat One), was €4 million.
Wearing red underwear on New Year’s Eve in Spain will give you luck for the year ahead. This tradition dates back several hundred years where red underwear was seen as a symbol of life. By wearing red underwear, Spanish New Year tradition say that Cupid will find your better half and will bring you love in the new year!
Gold and a glass of cava
Good fortune is a popular wish for a happy new year. In Spain, many people will drop something gold into a glass of Cava before the midnight toast. And the couples that are married toast with their wedding ring inside this glass of Cava.
The 12 lucky grapes
This is one of the most popular Spanish New Year traditions. When the clock strikes at midnight, you eat twelve grapes; one for each month of the year 2017.
