It is February, the second month of the year and the month in which half Spain prepares for the carnival, especially in the south of the country and of course in the Canary Islands. However, much more is happening this month in Spain such as a flamenco festival, gastronomic fairs and various other famous celebrations. Therefore, just a small overview what the month of February brings in Spain.
First the carnival. This colorful party in Spain is much more than just putting on some crazy clothes and partying. Carnival is a lifestyle that many Spaniards experience during the days or weeks that this party lasts. There are many carnivals in Spain but the best known are undoubtedly the following.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (January 21 to February 18)
Probably together with Tenerife the most famous carnival party in Spain. It is as if Rio de Janeiro has come to Spain with a lot of salsa and rumba music and lots of brightly colored personalities. There are performances, fashion shows and of course the Miss and Mr elections including the Drag Queen parties … the ladies / gentlemen who perform on a high heels like a beast on stage. Many shows are broadcast live on Spanish television. Also in the coastal town of Maspalomas there is a lot of party during the carnival.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife (January 18 to February 18)
On the Gran Canaria neighboring island of Tenerife you can revel with the rio-like carnival and it is a colorful procession of colored people who celebrate dancing parties. Here too people are dressed as if it were Brazil and also the cheerful caribbean music takes you to the tropical carnival. Also on Tenerife there are Mr and Miss competitions, performances and the typical Drag Queen parties. All in all a nice spectacle and also with nice warm weather, what does a good carnavalsvierder want even more.
Sitges (8 to 14 February)
The seaside resort of Sitges, just below Barcelona, is known in Spain as a carnival city and especially at the Drag Queens, which can party here as if it were 1999 (party like 1999 by Prince);). There are many carnival parades in the city where the emphasis is often on the gay scene with Drag Queens and relatives. If you are in the area or live nearby, you should definitely stop by. Nice to see is the bedrace.
Águilas (Murcia) (3 to 24 February)
In the town of Águilas in the south of the Murcia region one of the most famous carnivals of the Spanish mainland is celebrated. Well-known are the colorful parades with nicely dressed participants who go for it. Also known are the « cascarones », eggs filled with confetti and the « cuerva » drink, when you drink that the carnivale is completely released.
Cádiz (8 to 18 February)
Carnival is also celebrated in southern Spain and the city of Cádiz is probably best known for the carnival that takes place on the street and the singing groups of men and / or women. Especially the latter, the choirs who with their cheerful and very humorous songs politics, celebrities and everything and still somewhat to the heel. To understand all that you have to master the Spanish language because they sing very quickly and then also often with the typical dialect :). However, it is very nice to watch.
Wedding of Isabel in Teruel (15 to 18 February)
Teruel has the lovers or « amantes de Teruel » and Isabel is one of them. In February they always reflect on this sad love story with Diego and Isabel as the main characters. They are the Spanish Romeo and Juliet who are still standing hand in hand in the grave. During the festivities Teruel is transformed into a city from the Middle Ages with dancers, knights, nobility and of course the protagonists Diego and Isabel.
Jerez Flamenco festival (23 February to 10 March)
The city of Jerez de la Frontera is between the above dates the flamenco city of Spain where everything related to the flamenco culture is taken very seriously. There are many performances by dancers and singers but also musicians who make the best of themselves. A must if you like flamenco.
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (26 February to 1 March)
Between 26 February and 1 March you better not be in Barcelona because the hotels are full, on the street it is very busy, restaurants and bars bulge, taxi drivers are working overtime and it is very busy. This year, Barcelona is again the capital of the Mobile phones and everything that has to do with it during the MWC 2018.
