ABOUT THE PEÑON DE IFACH, CALPE

Discover the Peñón de Ifach Natural Park in Calpe

The Peñón de Ifach Natural Park is one of the most iconic landmarks on the Northern Costa Blanca, and a defining symbol of the beautiful seaside town of Calpe. Nestled between Altea and Moraira, Calpe is renowned for the majestic Peñón de Ifach, a natural wonder that captivates visitors year-round.

Declared a protected natural park in 1987 by the Valencian government, the Peñón de Ifach covers 45 hectares, later extended to 53.3 hectares in 2015. Rising 332 meters above sea level, this striking limestone formation offers not only breathtaking views but also unique ecosystems and cultural significance.

A Haven for Plants, Wildlife, and Marine Life

The Peñón de Ifach is home to a fascinating variety of flora, fauna, and marine life due to its diverse microhabitats. At the base, Mediterranean scrub vegetation thrives, with dwarf palms, junipers, and white pines creating a lush environment. Higher up, alpine plant species cling to cracks in the rock, enduring the harsh conditions of sun and sea winds.

Among the park's rarest plant species is the Ifac silene (Silene hifacensis), an endangered species that once flourished here but is now critically threatened, with fewer than 20 known specimens left in the wild.

The towering cliffs provide nesting sites for birds of prey such as peregrine falcons and Eleonor’s falcons, as well as seabirds like gulls and cormorants. The surrounding marine environment is equally rich, with rocky, stony, and sandy seabeds harboring a vibrant underwater ecosystem.

Cala El Racó: A Hidden Gem at the Foot of the Rock

At the base of the Peñón de Ifach lies Cala El Racó, a small gravel cove perfect for snorkeling, diving, and fishing. This picturesque spot is also the starting point of the Princess of Asturias Ecological Walk, a scenic trail offering breathtaking views of the coastline.

For diving enthusiasts, Cala El Racó features a unique underwater path marked with signposted panels and informative displays about the marine species that inhabit the area. The nearby IMEDMAR headquarters (formerly the fish market) enhances the experience with educational exhibits and audiovisual presentations.

Hiking the Peñón de Ifach Natural Park

Hiking the Peñón de Ifach is a must-do activity for visitors to Calpe. The trail is divided into two sections: the first is an easy ascent up to the tunnel, suitable for most visitors. The second section, from the tunnel to the summit, is more challenging and best suited for experienced hikers.

The journey begins at the foot of the rock, where you'll find a small car park. As you ascend, you’ll encounter scenic viewpoints, remnants of an ancient military fortress, and, for those who reach the top, unparalleled panoramic views of the Costa Blanca coastline—a truly rewarding experience.

The round-trip hike covers about 2 kilometers, with a 291-meter elevation gain, and typically takes around two hours. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, and avoid hiking during the hottest hours in summer.
